The First Cycle of Sampling and Analysis of Surface Water within the Project “Environmental Response to Mining Expansion in Timočka Krajina”

One of the main goals of the project “Environmental response to mining expansion in Timočka Krajina”, which is financed by the European Union and implemented by the association “Za Drinking Fountains” with partner organizations, is to determine the current state of the environment and monitor further mining on the quality of the environment. For that cause, the first of four cycles of measuring the quality of surface water, sediments and ichthyofauna was carried out from several watercourses around Bor and Zaječar (Brestovačka reka, Borska reka, Crni Timok, Veliki Timok).

According to Boban Pogarčić, the reference laboratory “Anahem” from Belgrade, which has many years of experience in testing water and soil pollution, will provide the association “Za Drinking Fountains” with sampling and analysis results.

Apart from the standard analyzes that include the physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters of the water, analyzes for heavy metals and mercury are now being carried out, in order to determine the impact of the new mine on the status of surface waters, ichthyofauna and sediments.

„According to our knowledge no such analyzes have been done so far, especially not for the purpose of informing citizens, which is our goal so that citizens can find out if there are any and how much river pollution there is in their surroundings“, adds Boban Pogarčić.

All measurement results will be published on the website www.ekoloskiodgovor.rs. By the end of this year, another cycle of sampling and analysis will be carried out.
