The First Episode of the Series ‘Look Around You’ – The Moan of the Timok River and the Blasting of Starica Mountain

Killing the Veliki Timok River and the Demolition of Starica Hill above Majdanpek are just part of the effects of the unprecedented mining expansion in Timočka Krajina. These documentary stories are part of the TV series “Look Around You,” which consolidates years of research on the impact of the so-called new era of mining in Timočka Krajina on the environment.

The documentary series was created as part of the project “Environmental Response to Mining Expansion in Timočka Krajina,” funded by the EU and implemented by the Association Za Drinking Fountains with partner organizations from Zajecar and Bor. During filming, the impact of pollutants was monitored from the beginning of 2022 until today, during which time there were also significant investments by Chinese companies “Serbia Zijin Mining” and “Serbia Zijin Copper” in opening new mines and expanding the capacities of the mining-metallurgical complex of the former RTB. This has had devastating consequences for the air, land, and watercourses, besides increased profits for the investors.

In the first story, “The Moan of the Timok River,” we present the process of how the largest and most famous river in eastern Serbia, once absolutely clean, turns into a dead river after receiving the Borska River, which has been turned into a waste canal of the Mining-Metallurgical Basin…

The scale of mining in Timočka Krajina is such that it literally changes the landscape, and just such an example is followed in the Second Story of this show, which is dedicated to the activism of the people of Majdanpek who opposed the blasting of  Starica mountain, one of the symbols of their town…
