Fountain Near the High Schools
The water is safe for drinkingIzvestaj-o-ispitivanju-Oktobar-2024
According to data from the book Zaječar’s Public Fountains by Miodrag Velojić, PhD, the fountain was built in 1937, and a park area with benches and a large chestnut tree was arranged around it. When the original fountain dried up, a new one was constructed in its place during the second half of the 20th century. This fountain is located today near the High School Center, at the corner of Kumanovska and Timočka Buna streets. There is no available information about the designer of the well or the above-ground structure.
The fountain and well were renovated in 2024/2025 as part of the Project for the Reconstruction and Revitalization of Artesian Fountains in Zaječar, implemented by the City of Zaječar, the company HEINEKEN Serbia, and the Association “Za Drinking Fountains.” During this process, the exact location of the artesian well was identified, and its revitalization was carried out — including the replacement of the damaged wellhead. In addition, the damaged concrete structure above ground was removed, the immediate surroundings were paved with granite cobblestones, and a new cast-iron fountain was installed.

Water characteristics
- Flow: 1937 – unknown, 1995 – 0.08 l/s, 2018 – 0.044 l/s
Temperature: 2018 – 15.2°C; 2021 – 16.0°C (with a fluctuation amplitude of 1.0)
Groundwater level: Artesian well (free-flowing) – It probably captures the first aquifer horizon at a depth of 98 to 118 m (Report on the Reserves of Groundwater in the Artesian Layers of the Zaječar Neogene Basin Captured by Public Fountains, P. Dokmanović, 2021); Piezometric pressure was not measured.
The water is of the hydrocarbonate-sodium type. Over several decades of continuous bacteriological and chemical testing of water quality conducted by the Institute of Public Health ‘Timok’ in Zaječar, occasional deviations have been recorded in the tested parameter limits for iron (Fe), turbidity and color. The measured concentrations of these parameters do not have a harmful effect on human health, so the water is safe for drinking.
