‘Two Spouts’ Fountain

The water is safe for drinking

The ‘Two Spouts’ Fountain is one of the more abundant and recognizable artesian fountains in Zaječar. It is located on the left bank of the Crni Timok River, below Beli Breg, in the immediate vicinity of the site where the Miladinović watermill once operated, before being demolished in the mid-20th century. Strong streams of water still flow through its two spouts, which is how the fountain got its name.

The fountain was built in 1983 on a borehole 183.60 meters deep, executed according to a design by geologist Dragoljub Šarčević, as part of research into the hydrogeological conditions of the Zaječar Neogene Basin. The works were carried out by the company ‘Georad Zaječar,’ while the investors included the Water Management Community of Negotin, the Republic Self-Managed Community for Geological Research, and the Fifth Local Community ‘Kotlujevac.’ The borehole was designed to ensure a stable and long-term water flow, which has been confirmed in practice by its decades-long operation.

The structure consists of three stacked concrete blocks of different dimensions. The base is rectangular and vertically grooved, while the upper parts are smooth and arranged asymmetrically, with the top block featuring a slanted upper edge. Two metal pipes emerge from the central block, through which water falls onto a metal grate set within a square recess at ground level. The fountain is placed on a plateau paved with concrete blocks, and on both sides there are smaller square elements which, together with the main structure, form a unified whole. The surface of the fountain has been painted in the colors associated with the supporters’ group ‘Grobari,’ reflecting the fountain’s current appearance.

Water characteristics

  • Flow: 1983 – 1.2 l/s; 2018 – 0.43 l/s
    Temperature: 16 °C
Groundwater level: Artesian flow (self-flow); piezometric pressure was not measured.

The water is of the hydrocarbonate-sodium type. Over several decades of continuous bacteriological and chemical water quality testing conducted by the Institute of Public Health “Timok” Zaječar, no deviations in the measured parameters have ever been recorded.

Well details

A cement plug was installed from 0 to 25 m, through which a 2-inch steel production casing was set from 0 to 165 m. The screened (filter) sections are located at intervals of 97.30–98.00 m and 137.00–143.10 m. The remainder of the borehole, from 165.00 to 183.60 m, was completed as an open hole, into which gravel pack material was placed.
