‘Zelengora’ Fountain
The water is safe for drinkingIzvestaj-o-ispitivanju-april-2024.
One of the oldest artesian fountains in the city, named after the tavern of the same name. According to sources found in the literature, this fountain was erected before the First World War. Initially, it had a concrete above-ground structure, which was removed during the 1930s and replaced by a new metal structure (similar to the one at the Jedinstvo fountain in Čupićeva Street).
The fountain dried up in February 2015, but the water began flowing again on March 18 of the same year.
The fountain and its well were restored in 2018 as part of the Project for the Reconstruction and Revitalization of Artesian Fountains in Zaječar, implemented by the City of Zaječar, the company HEINEKEN Serbia, and the Association ‘Za Drinking Fountains’. During this process, the artesian well of the fountain was reconstructed by inserting a new well structure into the existing one. Additionally, the original metal above-ground part of the fountain was repaired.

Water fountain location
It is located at the corner of Hajduk Veljko Street and Đorđe Simeonović Street, not far from the well-known Zaječar tavern ‘Zelengora’.
Water characteristics
- Flow: 1995 – 0,132 l/s, 2017 – 0,09 l/s, 2021 – 0,03 l/s
- Temperature: 2017 – 16,2 °C; 2021 – 15,9 °C
- Groundwater level: Artesian borehole (free-flowing); 2021 – Piezometric pressure in the range of 1.0–1.1 m, with a fluctuation amplitude of 0.1.
The water is of the hydrocarbonate-sodium type. Over several decades of continuous bacteriological and chemical testing of water quality conducted by the Institute of Public Health ‘Timok’ in Zaječar, occasional deviations have been recorded in the tested parameter limits for iron (Fe) and color. The measured concentrations of these parameters do not have a harmful effect on human health, so the water is safe for drinking.
